the Grenier de Chèvremont in Metz is an impressive municipal granary, crowned with battlements. It was built in 1457 and served as a wheat granary until 1870. Metz had three granaries in the middle ages, which were used to store tax revenues: the peasants of the surrounding villages paid the taxes imposed by the Republic of Metz (name of the government installed in the city from the 13th to the 16th century) in wheat. Integrated into the Golden Courtyard Museums of Metz, the former granary today houses medieval religious statuary.
