Maximilian’s Column in Blieskastel

pictures

description

brief description:

In 1823 the town of Blieskastel had the simple sandstone column erected on what is today Saargemünder Straße. Maximilian’s column measures 6,20 metres in height and weighs six tons. Inspired by Greec models, it was built in the characteristic shape of the Doric anta capital. The column was erected in honor of the Bavarian King Maximilian Joseph I. The inscription reads as follows: „Maximiliano Josepho/Patri Patriae/Cives Bliescastellani/MDCCCXXIII“. The words express the gratitude the citizens of Blieskastel felt toward their sovereign for the Bavarian constitution he enacted just a few years prior and a new road he had built through Blieskastel.
