brief description: 

Saarbrücken´s church of St. Louis is considered to be one of the most beautiful baroque churches in south-western Germany. Both the church (Ludwigskirche) and the square in front of it (Ludwigsplatz) were built between 1762 and 1775 by Friedrich Joachim Stengel, whose designs have shaped the city´s architectural landscape. Ludwigsplatz is also home to the Saarland State Chancellery, consisting of three historic buildings, linked by an atrium from the 1950s. At the western end of the square, you can find a former reformatory and orphanage, which today houses an art college (Hochschule der Bildenden Künste Saar). In easterly direction, the square is open onto the so-called baroque road (Barockstraße) which, to a large extent, has been historically preserved and leads to the banks of the Saar river

Die Kirche mit kreuzförmigem Grundriß ist eine Breitsaal oder Querhauskirche mit je einer Empore in den vier Kreuzarmen. Die Emporen werden von Karyatiden mit eigener Symbolaussage getragen. Der Sarkophag-Altar erzählt von Jesu Leiden und Sterben, während sich an der Kanzel Verkündigungselemente für Ostern, Auferstehung und Pfingsten, sowie für Bußpredigt, Schriftgebundenheit und Nachfolge finden. Der auf dem Kanzeldach schwebende Engel erzählt das Evangelium, die gute Nachricht von der Geburt des Heilandes und der Liebe Gottes an den Menschen. Über den Eingängen sind begründet auch in der Place Royale-Invention die Insignien des erbauenden weltlichen Herrschers, des Fürsten Wilhelm Heinrich zu sehen, sowie jeweils unmittelbar über der Tür eine Inschriftentafel, bzw. zwei Bildreliefs mit eigener bedeutsamer theologischer Aussage (Beständigkeit des Wortes Gottes; Weltgericht).
